- for 63 days each financial year, with the possibility of extensions of 21 days at a time if an ACAT considers this necessary.
How much does it cost?
Costs for respite care may vary depending on your circumstances and the kind of help you need. The Australian Government subsidizes a range of aged care services in Australia. If your circumstances allow, it is expected you’ll contribute to the cost of your care if you can afford to do so.
If your respite involves:
If your loved one is to receive residential respite care through an aged care home, you will only have to pay the Basic Daily Fee and perhaps a booking fee. The booking fee is a prepayment of respite care fees and not an extra payment. The booking fee cannot be more than either a full week's basic daily fee or 25% of the fee for the entire stay, depending on which amount is the lowest.
Schedule of Fees and Charges for Residential and Home Care: From 20 March 2022
This page provides the latest updates to aged care fees and charges.
[i] Residents in designated remote areas may be asked to pay an additional $1.06 per day.
[ii] This rate applies to residents who enter residential care within this time period but not to those who were already in care prior to this time period. The Maximum Permissible Interest Rate applicable for the calculation of a resident’s daily payments is fixed either at their date of entry to care (for a low means resident) or the date they agree to a room price (for a resident who is not eligible for government assistance with their accommodation costs).
and do remember that the daily care fee IS negiotable.
What you will pay is discussed and agreed upon between you and the organisation that delivers your respite services. The rate is set Before you receive the relevant services. If it is an Emergency, this assessment will be brief. Once the emergency has passed, the organisation that provides your respite will most likely talk to you about your needs and the type of help you might need in the future.
- - - - - - - - - - - -- - - - - --- --- ---- ---- - - - - - - - - Respite access If you are looking to access respite care services, whether that is in the community, at home, or in a residential aged care facility, you can contact Carer Gateway to find out your options.
Carer Gateway service providers can assist you in finding a respite placement for an older loved one so you can have time to do chores, go to personal appointments, catch up with friends or family, go on a holiday, or due to an emergency.
Taking time off from your caring duties is an important part of self-care for a carer, it allows you to recharge your batteries so you can continue with your caring duties.
When you call Carer Gateway, you can discuss what respite will suit your needs as well as what is available near you.
Respite care tends to be organised based on what services are available in your area, when the next opening is or if you need a specific time, what care the older person requires, and if the respite is needed urgently.
Booking respite care ahead of time can be really smart as sometimes respite can be booked out in your area.
If you are caring for a person who is 65 and over, you may need to contact My Aged Care to organise respite care for your older loved one in the community or in aged care. This can be beneficial if you can get respite care through your Government-subsidised Home Care Package or the Commonwealth Home Support Programme (CHSP).
If you require respite in an emergency, you can still call Carer Gateway to organise emergency respite care. For more information about emergency respite, read our article on the Aged Care Guide. Emergency respite is generally for unexpected events like, a carer dying or experiencing a major illness, a loved one of the carer dying, family problems or mental illness, or someone requiring care has their health and safety threatened by something.
You can access emergency respite 24/7 on the Carer Gateway helpline, 1800 422 737.
"Carers' helping hand from government"
National Carers Week starting October 10. Even if their love and the care they provide are unconditional, everybody deserves a break.

Emergency respite is one of hundreds of mostly free services available to informal or unpaid carers who are registered through the government-funded Carers Gateway and are looking after someone with a disability, chronic or life-limiting illness or someone who is frail aged, has a mental health illness, alcohol- or other drug-related issue. It's not a requirement for the carer to share living arrangements.
The Gateway is a relatively new concept aimed at unifying the information and advice on the supports available to informal carers across Australia.
Recognising that if you need help you need it quickly, registering as a carer with Carers Gateway involves completing a relatively simple assessment online or by p[hone (1800 422 737). Your information will then be shared with one of 16 gateway providers around the country who assist with support needed by carers, including counselling, practical help or skills training.
Caring for someone living with dementia can be particularly challenging without support.
Respite care is a sought-after solution to give carers and those being cared for a break. It might be through someone coming into a person's home regularly - specifically to give the carer a chance to do something for themselves, or for the person who needs help a regular chance to go somewhere else for a day, weekend or a couple of weeks. Options for places to go can include dedicated, government-approved ad private respite facilities as well as aged care facilities.
If you have been assessed by the Aged Care Assessment Team (ACAT) as being eligible for respite care, you are entitled to up to 63 days a year in an approved facility at a subsidized rate. It costs a set fee based on the basic care fee, which is currently %53.56 a day and covers everything from accommodation costs and meals to round-the-clock care.
Recognising that respite services can improve carer well-being, maintain the care relationship and avoid crises that may jeopardize the relationship between the carer and the person in their care, the government this year announced increased funding across several respite services.

Tips for those Carers who are looking after a loved one with Dementia:
https://www.dementia.org.au/
Caring is just something that women do. It is a part and parcel of your life. Those who take on the much more demanding role when a loved one suffers an illness have been found to have the worst health of anyone. Consider Respite as Your Holiday, just for a few hours to have that uninterrupted cup of coffee, or chat with friends, or just sit alone and allow yourself to "Just Be".

You can have 63 days of respite each calendar year (1 January–31 December) without your payment stopping. You can use these days for anything, including a holiday or simply a break from caring. While you're having a break the person getting care can either: be in formal respite care, at home, or elsewhere.

eSafety courses to keep Senior Australians connected during COVID-19
19 March 2021
A joint media release with The Hon Paul Fletcher MP, Minister for Communications, Cyber Safety and the Arts, about free webinars to help improve the online skills of Senior Australians as they increasingly turn to the internet to access online services during the COVID-19 pandemic.
Free daytime webinars are now available to help improve the online skills of Senior Australians as they increasingly turn to the internet to access online services and connect with loved ones during the COVID-19 pandemic.
These online courses are being delivered by the eSafety Commissioner as part of the Federal Government’s “Be Connected” initiative, aimed at empowering all Australians to develop the skills needed to thrive in a digital world.
Hosted by professional eSafety Commissioner trainers, the courses will offer participants guidance to help build basic online skills and confidence required to carry out video chats, telehealth, shopping and banking.
The classes commenced from 24 April 2020, and feature key topics specifically for remaining connected while social distancing measures are in place, including:

Video calls during social isolation may make no difference to the quality of life of older people, a review of scientific studies suggests.
The evidence from these three studies suggests that video calls have little to no effect on loneliness after three, six or 12 months. There is also little to no difference in symptoms of depression after three or six months, although after a year, older people who used video calls may have had a small reduction in depression compared to those who received usual care. Similarly, video calls may make little to no difference to older people’s quality of life.
A Cochrane Rapid Review, Video calls for reducing social isolation and loneliness in older people, will come as small comfort to many after mobile technology was widely touted as a way of countering loneliness in older people forced in to isolation during COVID-19 restrictions.
The authors of the review looked at three studies involving more than 200 participants aged 65 and over who used internet video calls on computers tablets or smartphones.

Residential care providers may receive respite subsidies and supplements for eligible residential respite care recipients. Residential care providers do not have a separate allocation of residential respite places. Home Care Clients Cancel Vital Services Amid Concerns About COVID-19
By Caroline Egan. Apr 1, 2020
Home care providers are looking “innovatively” at how they can deliver services to customers, Ms Sparrow said.
The government has helped, by allowing CHSP to be used flexibly. For example, if there is more need for food services than domestic assistance, then the funding can be used for the most needed purpose. If group activities are no longer taking place, the funding can be used for other forms of support.
Residents who receive home care services do so because the care is needed. It is their right to cancel services if they are concerned about COVID-19, but it’s important they have all the information before making that decision.
It’s also important that staff are able to fulfil all their infection control requirements in order to reassure clients and, of course, keep them safe.

New measures against COVID-19 have been unveiled for the aged care sector including a $235 million staff retention bonus for residential and home care providers.
Making the announcement last Friday, Prime Minister Scott Morrison said an additional $92.2 million would be provided for home care and CHSP providers, including services like Meals on Wheels.
The government will also provide $12.3 million to My Aged Care to respond to increasing demand. “This additional funding is being focused on those who are most vulnerable, to get them the additional support so they can get access to the essential things they need, particularly through things like Meals on Wheels and home care support and the other things older Australians will need going through this time,” the PM told a media conference.
Home care providers and organisations that deliver CHSP, including services such as shopping and meal delivery for people in self-isolation, will get an additional $92.2 million.
If you are eligible for CHSP services you will be expected to pay your provider for the services you receive at a subsidised rate, if you can afford to. You don’t need a financial assessment and there is only one fee per service and no exit costs. Service providers will charge different amounts for their services.

Unprecedented support for Australia’s carers
"The Morrison Government is introducing the single biggest reform in more than a decade to better support Australia’s 2.7 million carers.
Minister for Families and Social Services Anne Ruston today announced a new regional network of service providers to deliver more than five times the number of services currently available.
Ten not-for-profit organisations (Qld - Wellness Australia) will receive about $493 million over five years to establish a new network of 16 Carer Gateway service providers as part of the Morrison Government’s record commitment of nearly $700 million to support the important work of the nation’s unpaid carers.
“From April 2020, we have introduced a new service delivery model designed by carers, for carers to help them get the support they need early, before reaching crisis point. We are also providing demand driven funding for carers to access respite when they need it,” Minister Ruston said.
Under the new model, funding earmarked for respite will increase from the existing $44 million allocation to $65 million in the first year, increasing to $77 million in year five.

Increasingly, older people in Australia are choosing to remain living in their own homes for as long as possible.
https://agedcare.royalcommission.gov.au/publications/Documents/background-paper-6.pdf
While not everyone has family members and friends to support them, many older Australians benefit from carers who provide assistance of various forms, ranging from help with domestic work through to personal and health care needs. Caring is often associated with a pre-existing relationship, and can be a positive and rewarding experience for both the person needing care and the carer. Caring can also change the nature of that relationship, and it can become a source of financial, emotional, social and physical strain.

The Minister for Health has announced a new program that will trial new ways to provide palliative care services, delivering the right care at the right time, while also aiming to reduce hospitalisations. The Government is funding a pilot program so people nearing the end of their lives receive better care and treatment at home. The $8.3 million program will trial new ways to provide palliative care services, delivering the right care at the right time, while also aiming to reduce hospitalisations.
The Greater Choice for At Home Palliative Care program will be rolled out in ten locations around Australia, enabling people living with a life limiting illness to receive care and treatment services in their home.
The program will be administered through Primary Health Networks across Australia, and will be coordinated with local and state services, as well as aged care providers. The trial ran until June 2020 and interested people and their families, in the trial areas, should contact their GP to discuss joining the program.
The ten Primary Health Networks which have been selected to take part in the trial include:
• Brisbane South;
• Central QLD, Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast;
• Gold Coast;
• South Western Sydney;
• Murrumbidgee;
• Western NSW;
• North Western Melbourne;
• Eastern Melbourne;
• Adelaide, and
• Country WA.
This could include services from a local GP, palliative, hospital and specialist care support, and community and social services – all coordinated to ensure the patient is supported. People will receive the right care at home, tailored to their own need, which will hopefully mean less trips to the hospital to access these services.

Government funding is available for many different types of respite service to support people with dementia and their carers. However, access to respite has recently been reframed, and some aspects now depend on the age of the person with dementia.
For people living with dementia over the age of 65, respite can be accessed through My Aged Care by calling 1800 200 422 or visiting myagedcare.gov.au.
Meanwhile, the National Disability Insurance Scheme (NDIS) provides funding for services for people living with dementia under the age of 65. However, this doesn’t focus on services for the carer, but rather the person with the diagnosis. For more information, contact 1800 800 110 or visit ndis.gov.au.

You can find more information on the disability carers page on the DSS website.
FIND A SERVICE THAT SUPPORTS BOTH OF YOU
Respite will work most effectively if you can find a service that both the person with dementia and carer find attractive and valuable. In some cases, especially in more advanced cases of dementia, involving the person with dementia in all of the decisions and planning may not be possible. In this case, carers will need to advocate for the type of services they think will work for both parties.
It will be important to reassure people with dementia if they are anxious that respite may in fact be a positive experience that provides them with opportunities to engage with others and participate in meaningful activities. “He goes to the Men’s Shed, two mornings a week and from here he can walk to the Men’s Shed. He walks down and at lunch time, one of the other people who live in the village bring him home. He needs to be in respite where he can take part in the activities and be able to chat to people and socialize.”

Mable (formerly Better Caring) - Winner of the Information Technology in Aged Care (ITAC) 2016 awards.
An online platform where consumers can find and hire local care and support workers.
Mable is an online social platform. Older people and/or their family members use Mable to find, connect with and directly hire people (e.g. registered and enrolled nurses, support workers and allied health therapists). Participants described Mable as “innovative” and a “disruptor”.
http://www.agedcarematters.net.au/wp-content/uploads/2020/11/MableReport.pdf
Mable does not provide the care, and we do not employ the workers on our platform. We offer a new model in community and home care that allows you to choose and directly hire the people who will be coming into your home to provide care and support. By hiring directly, you can afford more hours of care, while care workers have the potential to earn more, and you can both benefit by building long-term relationships.
Do your own search for a suitable Carer just for YOU. Connects those who are able to manage their own level of care genuine choice and control around who comes into their home, and what services they provide. Just input your suburb to see a range of available Carers. How it works: https://mable.com.au/ Join Mable for free and begin your search for your new support person (or people). Enjoy the power to make your own choices around your support requirements.
Mable (formerly Better Caring), is a website where people who require in-home or community care can search for and connect directly with:
Put your Home Care Package funding to the best use possible. With Mable, you could receive more hours of support, as much as double what you might receive through traditional aged care providers. Plus, there’s flexibility around session times and you’re free to choose someone as unique as you are!

Provider organisations may hold and administer an individual’s funding, it is on the basis that they respond to, support and facilitate individual consumer choice in relation to both services and who provides those services.
FAQ's https://mable.com.au/faq
Q. I have a Home Care (Aged Care) Package. Can I select a care worker off the Mable (formerly Better Caring) website and have my provider pay for the care?
A. We have designed Mable to be user friendly for providers and their clients to enable this to happen. All Home Care Packages are now Consumer Directed Care (CDC) packages, which means that a client can select a particular individual or service provider. As such, under your CDC package, you should be able to select the right care worker for you on Mable. Your provider will have a responsibility to make sure any care worker you select has a current police check, is suitably qualified and experienced, has insurance and an ABN. These things can be verified by the provider on our platform.
You can have the flexibility to explore more options to make your Home Care package go further if your provider works with you to engage care workers directly via Better Caring. You also get the benefit of building a long term relationship with a care worker that you have chosen.
To find out if your provider is able to work with Mable, call us on 1300 73 65 73.

Respite Care in Gold Coast - Many of our clients require the help of Home Caring around the clock, seven days a week. Yet, there are others who prefer to stay on in their role as primary caregiver that we are still able to help.
We know the challenges and stresses that can come with becoming a primary caregiver. It’s a demanding role, one that takes a lot of time, effort, and patience. Many take on this role, understanding that they will be sacrificing some of the personal life they enjoy. We can offer flexible respite care services, whether you need us for a few hours a day, one day a week, on weekends, or whenever suits.
Our in-home dementia care services for people living with dementia or disability at their home provide your family with 24 hour care support where you often need it the most. A carer at home could be exactly what is needed to get the house back into order and maintained.
It might only be simple household tasks you need a helping hand with or you might require a dedicated live-in carer specially trained and qualified to give you the help precisely where you need it most.
Our palliative care services are designed to offer all of the day-to-day assistance and healthcare management services that can ensure as high a quality of life as we can. It also comes with specialist palliative services, such as aiding with comfort and comfort, providing pain relief assistance, and even offering access to spiritual support services if desired.
Suffering a mental illness is more common than you might think. A quarter of people suffer mental health problems at some point, but what’s important is how those problems are dealt with. If problems are left to get worse and develop into further mental and physical health problems, it’s obviously not helpful. That’s why it’s so important to get help when you know you need it.
With the right kind of support, your mental health problems can be managed in a way that ensures you can live the life you want to, as can the people around you. There’s no reason why you can’t live independently with the help of an experienced and compassionate home carer who can help you in whatever ways necessary. It’s a solution that works for lots of people around the world.
At Home Caring, we make sure that you’re always in control of the kind of care we offer. We’ll tailor our care service to your specific needs because we know that each individual case is unique and your care needs won’t be the same as somebody else’s. We’re going to talk more about the mental illness care services we provide so keep reading. https://www.homecaring.com.au/mental-illness-care/

The program currently provides funding for more than 11,000 visitors, and home care visits make up 27 per cent of funding.
The CVS operates in every state and territory.

(Hospice care is for people who can no longer benefit from regular medical treatment and are likely in their final months of life. Instead of continuing to try curing or delaying the fatal disease or condition, hospice ends curative treatment altogether. Instead, its goal is to control pain and other symptoms and make the patient's last stretch of life as comfortable as possible.)
Hospice can result in a significant improvement in the patient's quality of life, with a focus on her as a person rather than on her disease. Hospice care can be received at home; someone can also receive this end-of-life care in a hospital, nursing home, or private hospice facility. Which is best depends on a patient's physical condition, whether the home is suited to providing hospice care, and the resources available in your community.
Hospice care isn't necessarily continuous, and a patient may switch into and out of it as a medical condition improves or deteriorates. For example, if a patient is in hospice care and goes into remission -- a period of relief from the symptoms of an illness -- the hospice care can be stopped, only to be resumed again if the symptoms reoccur or the condition gets worse.)

DO YOU 'NEED' A WELL-DESERVED b r e a k ??? YES :-)
The New Changes to the approved provider process mean existing residential aged care or flexible care providers can now opt-in to deliver home care without having to submit a new application. This means more Choice for YOU:
- increased competition from new players including residential care, retirement living operators, Commonwealth Home Services Programme (CHSP) providers, private home care providers and brokerage agencies (these brokered agencies will be the biggest challenge for approved providers because they already have the systems and processes in place to provide services; they already have staff and in a lot of cases they have quite strong relationships with the clients, stronger than the approved provider)
- competition will also come from retirement village operators looking to provide services to their residents and from large GP practices
- allied health businesses were also expressing an interest in becoming approved home care providers, especially in the context of an increased focus on wellness and reablement
- strong competition would come from labour hire companies that currently supply staff to aged care
- home care franchise groups and residential care providers who are looking to deliver community care
- Increase in marketing to consumers and business tactics used by providers to ‘win’ customers.
Other changes to My Aged Care include:
- new information fields for home care providers to detail their services
- ability for assessors to issue referrals after finalising an assessment along with new mandatory fields for assessors recommending home care
- additional fields in the service finder and enhanced sort and filter options in all portals
- changes to service referrals for providers.
Those who are over 65 years of age contact the My Aged Care line on 1800 200 422 for assistance with all their needs. This has the added advantage that you do not need to Repeat, Repeat yourself at each phone call :-)
- Levels 1, 2, 3 and 4 (click here for an explanation of the Levels)
- plus information on
- Part or full day respite in day care centres in their area/preferred location
- In-home respite services, including overnight care and personal care services
- Overnight community cottage respite
- Activity programs in the community
- Respite for carers of people with dementia and challenging behaviours.
To register for services, call 1800 422 737 or visit www.carergateway.gov.au for more information.
Emergency respite is available 24 hours a day, 7 days a week by calling 1800 422 737.

High Priority is defined as: Client is considered at urgent and immediate risk in terms of their personal safety or at immediate risk of admission into residential care. The client may have a carer and the carer arrangements are unsustainable or the carer is at crisis point.

Emergency Respite 1800 059 059
- for 63 days each financial year, with the possibility of extensions of 21 days at a time if an ACAT considers this necessary.
How much does it cost?
Costs for respite care may vary depending on your circumstances and the kind of help you need. The Australian Government subsidizes a range of aged care services in Australia. If your circumstances allow, it is expected you’ll contribute to the cost of your care if you can afford to do so.
If your respite involves:
- in-home respite,
- day respite, or
- overnight or weekend respite,
- costs can vary depending on the type of service – from an hourly rate for in-home respite to a sessional fee for a morning or afternoon in a day care centre.
- Any fees and eligibility for subsidy will be discussed and agreed upon with your service provider before you receive the relevant services. If you receive respite care in an aged care home, different fees will apply.

- OR a short-term stay in a nursing home - for Respite vacancies NOW, to have a break from the normal routine :-) A sort of 'try-before-you-buy' option! After all, this will possibly be "Their Home" now. Suggestion: Let them dip their toe in the water and try respite care for awhile. Let's them suss out the place without having to commit to a long-term permanent placement.

If your loved one is to receive residential respite care through an aged care home, you will only have to pay the Basic Daily Fee and perhaps a booking fee. The booking fee is a prepayment of respite care fees and not an extra payment. The booking fee cannot be more than either a full week's basic daily fee or 25% of the fee for the entire stay, depending on which amount is the lowest.

eSafety courses to keep Senior Australians connected during COVID-19
- Video chatting with family, friends and health professionals;
- Ordering groceries and other shopping essentials online for home delivery;
- Carrying out everyday tasks online, including accessing essential services; and
- Accessing Federal Government information updates from australia.gov.au and the Coronavirus Australia app

Residential respite subsidy and supplements
Residential care providers may receive respite subsidies and supplements for eligible residential respite care recipients. Residential care providers do not have a separate allocation of residential respite places. Rather a portion of each permanent allocation of residential care places is used for the provision of respite care, known as respite days.

• Brisbane South;
• Central QLD, Wide Bay and Sunshine Coast;
• Gold Coast;
• South Western Sydney;
• Murrumbidgee;
• Western NSW;
• North Western Melbourne;
• Eastern Melbourne;

Can continuity be ensured, in the sense of providing the same staff member each time?
How does the service provider respond to the changes that might occur as the disease progresses?

- nurses,
- care and support workers in their area.
- Whether you’re looking for round-the-clock care,
- overnight respite,
- daily assistance, or
- just weekly drop-ins, on Mable, you can find the highest quality workers fast and easily.

There are Carer Support Groups in Your Area - YOU are Most Welcome to attend whatever you want :-)
Angels Carer Support Group. Held the last Tuesday of each month at St. Paul's Anglican Church Hall, 69 Palm Beach Ave, PALM BEACH
Come just after 1.00pm for that cuppa and a chat. Often we have Speakers on subjects of interest to us as Carers - they start about 1.00pm and go to about 3.00pm. Other times we just sit, relax and enjoy each other's company and support each other as we face the daily caregiving tasks. Sit and chat, and take a brief break - for YOU :-) We hold our meetings on the last Tuesday of each month. Father Phillip is a Great Supporter of the Angels.
YOU are most welcome to join us :-) Do take CARE of YOU too...
