Standing up from a Chair:
You may have difficulty getting out of a chair, particularly a low one. You can solve this problem by raising the height of the seat either by putting an extra firm cushion on the seat, and if necessary against the back of the chair, or by raising the whole chair on wooden/plastic blocks on on platform or, just raising the back legs. Whichever method you choose, care must be taken that the chair is Stable. Alternatively, you may want to buy a higher chair or you can ask your Occupational Therapist to advise you.
Try the following sequence to help you stand up from a chair:
"Pump the Gas"
If you get up during the night to use the bathroom, sit for a moment or two before standing to give your blood pressure a chance to adjust to your upright position.
Point and flex your feet a few times to get the blood flowing.
This is one of our favorite tips, because most people don't understand why they fall when they get out of bed, and it's a simple strategy that has helped many people. "Pumping the gas" is also useful after sitting for extended periods, like at the movies or dinner (especially in winter, when people tend to be sitting for long holiday meals), or when watching TV.

Try the following sequence to help you stand up from a chair:
- Move to the edge of the chair
- Place your feet on the floor, well under you
- Place your feet 8-10 inches apart (20 to 25 cms)
- Put your hands on the arms of the chair, or on the sides of the chair seat
- Now lean forwards as far as you can from your hips ie nose over toes :-)
- Press down on your feet and push forwards with your arms, and stand up. If you cannot stand on your first attempt rock yourself forwards and try again until you succeed.
