Most people don't want to move from their own home, but when they begin to have problems moving around, the upheaval of even thinking about, let alone planning the move can take its toll on your health. There IS an alternative! You don't have to move away from your established communities and good friends and neighbours.
Think also of YOUR own ongoing health. Looking after someone is Exhausting, Frustrating, and endless... Look ahead, and if you can foresee the time approaching when, due to an escalation of your loved one's illness, your own sheer exhaustion, lack of a good night's sleep (Oh, for an uninterrupted night's sleep), and that lack of available help when needed, mean that you are beginning to look Seriously at placing them in permanent residential care. Have another look at your own home.
Is there a second bedroom, a Guest room, the long departed kids room, a rumpus room that is no longer used, a rarely used lounge room, a second garage that can be permanently blocked off... Move IN. And I am talking Seriously here. When that time had come with Don and he needed the main bedroom to be His Alone, along with his newly acquired hospital bed (some falls out of bed in the middle of the night when you are sound asleep can shake the confidence of anyone), and to give the lovely girls that extra room to assist Don. I Moved into the spare bedroom. Previously this had been storage for the walking sticks, walker, wheelchair, shower chair, storage for needed sheets, blankets... moisture retention pads for the bed, and extra towels... continence pads, excess clothing (most of which would never be worn again)... MOVE All of This into the main bedroom. Move all of your own clothing, dressing table, shoes and everything into the spare bedroom. Your very own room to decorate as You like.. Lots of room now!
One interesting thing that I was not expecting was that that very first night, I slept like a log for fourteen hours straight! Sometimes after that, when the lovely girls would come to get Don up, give him his shower, take him to physio... I would meet them at the front door and say, "I am going back to bed now. Do not disturb." LOL Sometimes one of the girls would say, "I looked in to see if you were alright and you were dead to the world."
The thing is, it Worked!

MEDIA RELEASE: Changes to LifeTec’s Service Model
Friday, 31st January 2020
Consumer directed care reforms have resulted in many benefits for consumers and our sector. These reforms have also seen new consumer expectations emerge which have led to many providers, including LifeTec, making changes to their service model to better meet peoples’ wants and needs.
A significant shift we have experienced is consumers’ preference to receive services at their place of residence rather than at LifeTec’s premises. In response we have increased the mobility of our health professionals to enable them to provide more services to consumers at a time and place of the consumers’ convenience. This means that many of our clinical consultations, including the trialling of relevant assistive technology equipment, now take place in peoples’ place of residence.
This new approach has resulted in changes to LifeTec’s Brisbane office in Newmarket, which are designed to better meet peoples’ expectations. Although LifeTec will remain in the same Newmarket premises we have been at since 2006, our office will be reduced in size and will no longer provide a dedicated assistive technology equipment display. We expect renovations will be completed by early February 2020. There are no planned changes to LifeTec’s Townsville premises at this stage.
It is important to confirm that LifeTec will continue to provide valuable assistive technology services that have assisted thousands of people achieve their needs and aspirations over the past 40 years. Some questions to ask yourself also:
- Is the main bedroom and bathroom on the first floor? Consider the increasing difficulty of going up and down the stairs. Some of them are quite steep and not all have railings on both sides. If you want to keep this arrangement, consider a stair lift, or build in a lift, even if is only to the first floor.
- Is it feasible to convert one of the rooms on the ground floor to a bedroom for your loved one?
- Is there a second bathroom and that all important toilet on the ground floor? Is there ease of access? Ideally, the toilet needs to be in the same room as the wheel-in shower, and take away the glass enclosure.
- Do you have railings along all of the usual walk paths, along hallways, beside the toilet, in the shower...
- And of course, the beauty of all this is that it enhances the eventual selling of your home, should you find it too empty and the upkeep too difficult when they depart, or when you yourself need that 'extra care' of the nursing home.
