Social support for older men
Last Updated at July 20th 2021
CONSUMER STORY - Whether it’s enjoying a coffee while reading the newspaper, participating in projects to raise money and help the local community, or to simply have a yarn with your mates, men’s sheds across the nation are making a big difference in the lives of older men.
https://www.agedcareguide.com.au/information/social-support-for-older-men
There are around 1,000 men’s sheds across the nation, Government and non-Government funded, with around 250,000 men who are members. The Federal Government doesn’t directly provide funding to sheds, instead helping with initiatives such as health events, while State Governments can provide grants to actually build a shed in a particular area.
Non-Government funded sheds get their funding by applying through small grants, such as the Shed Development Grants Program through the Australian Men’s Shed Association, or by raising money through selling things they make in the shed. Some sheds may charge a small fee each week to cover the cost of food and coffee.
Many sheds are jumping on board a number of men’s health initiatives, including check up programs using local health services and information sessions, on topics such as heart disease, diabetes and prostate, opening up the conversation on issues rarely discussed by men.
But, as Gary points out, the root of many men’s shed organizations is in giving back to their community.

Home Office and Study Nooks...
https://hireahubby.com.au/home-offices-and-study-nooks/
By now we’re all aware that working from home has become the norm and it’s not going anywhere fast. Maybe that’s not such a bad thing. If anything, the current COVID-19 crisis has proven to us just how many jobs can be done at home. This means more flexibility and a better work-life balance for those who are spending too many hours at the office. Here’s the catch, working from home offers us a lot of opportunities to be distracted! Like the fridge. That’s why we need to make sure we have a dedicated space for work. If you have a spare room, a home office is the way to go. And if you don’t, you’d be surprised how you can make use of the space you do have to create the perfect study nook!
Home Offices
If you’re in the market for a home office, then look no further than Hire A Hubby. We’ll transform your spare room from a dumping ground to an office fit for an executive.

Home modification overlooked despite desire to stay put

Many older Australians may be forced into care because they haven’t given thought about modifying their homes, according to the authors of a report. The South Australian-based Global Centre for Modern Ageing surveyed more than 1,000 Australians aged over 55 about their attitudes towards staying home, moving into alternative accommodation and home modifications.

Chris Hadfield- tips on spaceship living Can't handle two weeks in your house? Try a year in space.
VICTOR TANGERMANN MARCH 24TH 2020
Retired Canadian astronaut Chris Hadfield also had some advice to give in a video uploaded to his YouTube channel over the weekend.
His advice is to approach the situation from an analytical place.
“Once you understand the risk and your mission, your sense of purpose, and your obligations, then take action. Start doing things,” Chris Hadfield said.
Men are not exactly renowned for sharing their feelings or opening up emotionally.
Decades worth of stigmatism and social expectations have seen generations of male Australians forgo the opportunity to talk about problems, and opt for silence instead. While notions like this might seem outdated in this day and age, sadly they are still far too prominent, and even though attitudes are changing, nowhere is this problem more prevalent than in elderly males.
Believe it or not, men over the age of 85 have the highest suicide rate in Australia, and these deaths are not all the result of men who were dealing with mental illness. This tragedy targets the everyday men who feel worthless and undervalued by a society they once played a significant part in.
SOME MEN’S GROUPS ON THE GOLD COAST
"More than 100 Men's Sheds across Australia will have access to $500,000 for upgrades and new equipment or to host events. Health Minister Greg Hunt said sheds could apply for grants of up to $10,000 with priority given to organizations in disadvantaged areas. Men's Sheds help men find social support, while being engaged in meaningful community projects," he said.
Grants will be awarded to sheds for health and wellbeing events, improvements and purchasing equipment.
Many thanks for the Courier Mail, July 22 page 13 for this timely and most important information for Men's Sheds."
A Men's Shed is an updated version of the backyard shed that has long been part of the Australian culture. It is a community shed for men to potter, fix tools, make things, meet with mates about the football and the issues of life.
Men generally have difficulty discussing issues with isolation, loneliness and depression - all of which can churn from retirement, illness or relationship breakdowns. Being part of their peer group and keeping active and busy helps men cope with these problems.
Men’s Sheds receive $400,000 in grants
26 September 2018
Men’s Sheds across the country have received a total of $400,000 in grants from the Morrison Government to boost the health and wellbeing of men in their communities. To mark Men’s Shed Week, I am delighted to announce that under round 17 of the Government’s National Shed Development Programme 104 sheds received grants...
Donations to Men's and Women's Sheds of $2. or more to any Shed will be able to claim an income tax deduction for that donation from 1 July 2019. Australian Men's Shed was formed in 2007 and now has almost 1000 sheds and about 150,000 participants.

Thinking of starting a Men’s Shed?
Have a look at the AMSA Interactive Manual.
Being a part of a Men’s Shed provides opportunities to participate actively in the community with other men from diverse backgrounds. Being involved in a social way at a Men’s Shed has been shown to increase our quality of life.
Shed Type Activities can be:
· Where the primary activity is the provision of a safe, friendly and inclusive environment where males are able to gather together and/or work on meaningful projects at their own pace, in their own time and in the company of other males
· The manufacture of a variety of products including toys, household or garden furniture, Indigenous crafts or wood turned articles
· Activities that may include gardening, wood turning, metalwork, undertaking repairs or restoration such as heritage machinery, bicycle and small engine maintenance, computer training & cooking
. The undertaking of community projects
· Participation in training programmes such as First Aid & computers
· Participation in activities that advance the health and well-being of their male members and
· Engagement in traditional and cultural activities such as art and crafts, traditional hunting and fishing
Us blokes love to help out others – in fact we will help out others before we help ourselves. However, when we don’t know what to do or how to help, we often do nothing or withdraw because we “don’t want to do the wrong thing!” This only increases social isolation.
Until now there has been little specific information available to support those of us men who are in the sheds who have dementia. Yet the shed is often one of the most important spaces available to men who have a diagnosis of dementia. And for those men who have taken on the role of Carer - a difficult enough job at the best of times.
This manual provides us males with the tools to change this and shows how we can effectively work with, and help out, mates who are dealing with dementia in a way that is not patronising or demeaning – our pride is important to us! It provides practical ideas that are, in most cases, easily achievable and which can make a positive difference. This info serves to improve our knowledge about dementia, help us learn how to provide assistance and to serve as a guide to look for additional information and support.

“Spanner in the Works?” – a Men’s Health initiative by the Australian Men's Shed Association.
Take the Test: "Spanner in the Works?"
Many of us blokes are not very good at looking after ourselves physically or emotionally. Physically, if we have an ache or pain, our attitude is often that of “I’ll battle through this” or “I’ll wait a while and see if this gets better by itself”. For most of us we get away with this most of the time. Only when the aches or pain are overpowering us do we make the decision to do something about it and get it checked out by a doctor or other Health Professional.
Support and Contact
The program “Spanner in the Works?” is fully supported by the Australian Men’s Shed Association. GET IN TOUCH Email: [email protected]
Under the Australian Government National Shed Development Programme (NSDP), the Australian Government allocated $800,000 this financial year, with a funding pool of $400,000 per round. Over the past five years a total of $1,975,000 has been allocated to assist new and existing Sheds. Men’s Shed grants support the purchase of tools, equipment, community projects, training, building maintenance and development, and health improvement activities.

We achieve this through individual support and group programs for men, including men’s groups, workshops and other opportunities for self-discovery. Our evidence based programs help men to be more grounded and connected, which frees up a lot of energy normally wasted on self doubt and putting on a mask just to fit in.
This freed up energy can then be put towards being an authentic and purposeful man - a man's full potential in being the best man he can be.

RESPITE FOR THE FELLOW’S and for YOU too!
"I hope you realize, when you have mates, buddies and old friends, brothers and sisters, who you chat with, laugh with, talk with, have sing songs with, talk about north-south-east-west or heaven and earth, that is true happiness!"

Home modification overlooked despite desire to stay put

https://www.australianageingagenda.com.au/2020/02/18/home-modification-overlooked-despite-desire-to-stay-put/

- First, figure out the actual risks that you and your loved ones are facing right now.
- Then find an objective and set yourself goals.

WHAT ITEMS/ SERVICES ARE ELIGIBLE for Government Grants?

As part of the renovations at Rosemary House, a purpose-built Men's Shed has been redesigned to resemble an everyday shed that many Australians like to tinker in. However, they do need ongoing support to fund tools of the trade and create an ongoing social engagement program that give their members purpose and meaning.
The men have also been busy putting together some furniture over the past weeks, including a new side table, buffet table and some handy storage shelves.

We would be pleased to welcome you at our Shed. When you come, you will find some members working on their own projects (browse our “Gallery” page) others working on stuff we sell, like possum boxes; and then we make toys for charities.
We are open every morning except Sunday. Activities kick-off before nine o’clock and if you come on a Monday you will see sparks flying, as our metal workers build barbecues from old gas bottles, for Pacific Island people.
On Tuesdays, you will find our wood turners at work and we have a great stock of exotic seasoned timbers available for them.
On Wednesdays we have some wood carvers at work.
For the rest of the week we will be working on projects, depending on what is on order at the time and on any day there are some members constructing their own stuff.
Help? Yes, members get advice from our Club Captains, one of whom is in charge each day.
Come at ten o’clock and you will hear “smoko” called and we gather for a cuppa and a few biscuits and….. well, you know what blokes do when they get together.
Join us - you will be most welcome!

Weekly Mens Group - Robina
Complete Men is a Social Enterprise with a mission to help, support and inspire men of all ages to reach their full potential.
Event runs from 6:45 PM to 9:30 PM
Weekly on Wednesday
Please contact Tim on 0422 508 533 or complete the form . We'll have a quick chat on the phone to let you know what to expect and to ensure you receive a warm welcome to the group.

There are Carer Support Groups in Your Area:
Angels Carer Support Group. Held the last Tuesday of each month at St. Paul's Anglican Church Hall, 69 Palm Beach Ave, PALM BEACH
Come just after 1.00pm for that cuppa and a chat. Often we have Speakers on subjects of interest to us as Carers - they start about 1.30pm and go to about 3.00pm. Other times we just sit, relax and enjoy each other's company and support each other as we face the daily caregiving tasks. Sit and chat, and take a brief break - for YOU :-) We hold our meetings on the last Tuesday of each month. Father Phillip is a Great Supporter of the Angels.
YOU are most welcome to join us :-) Do take CARE of YOU too...
