“Spanner in the Works?" – a Men’s Health initiative by the Australian Men’s Shed Association. 21-10-15.
The ‘Spanner in the Works?’ websit malehealth.org.au/checkup/ provides access to more than 52 organisations, such as beyondblue and The Heart Foundation.
“Five men die every hour in Australia from preventable causes and almost five men die by suicide every day,” said David Helmers, chief executive of the Australian Men’s Shed Association (AMSA).
The AMSA-funded site launched in Newcastle on Tuesday 21st October 2015.
Take the test: "Spanner in the Works?"
Many of us look after our machines better than we look after ourselves. If our machines are not regularly serviced and maintained, if they do not have preventative maintenance carried out then mechanical and performance problems start to occur. If we neglect our health in any area it will catch up with us in the same way.
Many of us blokes are not very good at looking after ourselves physically or emotionally. Physically, if we have an ache or pain, our attitude is often that of “I’ll battle through this” or “I’ll wait a while and see if this gets better by itself”. For most of us we get away with this most of the time. Only when the aches or pain are overpowering us do we make the decision to do something about it and get it checked out by a doctor or other Health Professional.
Likewise, emotionally, we may also take the wait and see attitude. Only when the situation becomes emotionally overwhelming do we seek some help. Yet while we are doing this, while we are waiting and seeing, the problem can get worse. We may then end up taking out our frustration on our loved ones and friends. And, by waiting and seeing, we also run the risk of the problem becoming harder and harder to treat.
